If it was me, I would render the crumbs in an element or similar, then if no crumbs are set, just echo out a basic $html->link() instead :)

Granted it would be a fat element, as you would need to detect which controller you were in and add the correct crumb.

I guess you could just manually add a static $html->link to the /pages/home, or whatever you were using.

hi Tobman!

I just wrote a very similar post and then i googled and found your site. Mine is a bit more specific about the recent binary release of mysql for leopard with a working pref pane and startup item (which weren't working for a long time) but yours is better written and gives useful insights too. It's actually quite a tricky thing for beginners if you add up all the little steps and where small errors can cause big ehadaches, so I guess it is good to have all the pieces out there. And especially when cleared up and gotcha's hgihlighted.

have a good christmas - rc4 is wicked!

Well, the parameter usage has been undeprecated in the meantime, but the parameter has now a new meaning, see my more recent article: http://cakebaker.42dh.com/2008/11/05/the-modelvalidates-trap/

<a href="#comment-54" rel="nofollow">@Tony Bianco</a>

I sometimes get "fopen" warnings on my development Linux server. I'm not really sure where this comes from, but it usually helps to delete all the files in the tmp directory and reload the page. I haven't noticed anything like this on my local Mac though.

After making all the files in the tmp directory writeable doing a chmod 777 I get an even worse error. I get this error "Warning: unlink" and "Warning: fopen".

I'm not sure what to do here.
